Fiji Holidays: Things to Do Rafting the Navua River

Posted in Travel

For a really authentic and genuinely great time on your Fiji Holidays you need to consider this “must do”.  If you love being on the water then rafting the upper Navua River is a serious must do for you.

It doesn’t matter where you’re at on the islands if you’re staying at a major hotel you can call the Fijian Rivers office and they will figure out a way to get you to the spot so you can have your day on the river.  It will cost you about $350, but it is well worth it.  If you do decide to get transport from your hotel to the river you can expect an early day, so be prepared to be up at the crack of dawn.

You will go on a nice easy 20-30 minute hike until you reach your destination.  You will then be outfitted with all of your safety equipment including life preservers, helmets and your own paddles.  The guides will provide you with basic safety instructions, but you don’t need to worry because the rapids here are pretty tame.  If you’re an adrenaline junkie looking for his next fix, then this isn’t for you.  If you’re a beginner looking for an absolutely stunning visual experience and to get down to the nitty gritty of Fijian culture, then this is for you.

The guides are from the local villages in the area so they have immense arrays of knowledge on the history of the area and they will not disappoint you.  The guides are wonderfully friendly and they will make sure you laugh and have a great time.

If you’re interested in learning about the ecology of Fiji on your Fiji Holidays then this is a great place to go because the local villagers run the program and they have a vested interest in the ecology of the area.

A great thing is these guides are getting directly paid by you, so when you go on this rafting tour you’re providing money directly to the villages you will be visiting which is a great feeling.  A lot of Fijians don’t get paid much for all of their labour, so it’s an awesome feeling to provide them an honest day’s earnings for doing something they love to do.

If you want your family holidays Fiji to include something awe inspiring that a lot of people don’t get to see then a trip rafting on the Navua river is perfect for you.
